What’s
Satellite: ·
According to the Oxford dictionary, a satellite is: ‘A heavenly body or
man-made object which moves around a larger one.’ ·
A satellite is a man-made object put into orbit around a larger body. ü
Types of
Satellites: Natural: Naturally existing heavenly bodies, which revolve around
the planets. E.g., The moon for the earth and the Titan for the
Jupiter. Artificial: (On the basis of the application) -Communication
-Reconsats -Navigation -Weather -SIGINT -Surveillance -Early Warning ü
Artificial
Satellites: Satellites
provide the capacity for instant communications
between operational forces and their national command authorities irrespective
of distance or time of day. The weather
forecasting that is vital to successful military operations is based
almost entirely on data gathered by satellites. Navigation
satellites provide data of such accuracy that a receiver anywhere on earth can
establish its position to within a few tens of meters. Reconnaissance
satellites are important in verifying agreed limits on strategic arms and of
monitoring new military developments. Wide-area surveillance satellites are used to to detect ships and submarines at sea. Early Warning satellites are in place to detect missile launches. Finally, The
most secret satellites are those used for electronic
intelligence-gatherings. ü

Spy Satellites: ·
The American government has been using satellites for surveillance
purposes for many years. ·
Satellites used for surveillance purposes are more commonly referred to as
spy satellites. ü
Types: ·

Lacrosse: ·
A space based imaging radar can see through clouds and can potentially
provide images with a resolution that approaches that of photographic
reconnaissance satellites. A project to develop such a satellite by NASA is code
named Lacrosse, first launched in 1988. ·
Lacrosse's main attribute, like most spy satellites, is its image sensor. ·
Lacrosse beams microwave energy to the ground and reads the weak
return signals reflected into space. This allows the satellite to 'see'
objects on Earth that would otherwise be obscured by cloud cover and darkness. ü New Technologies:·
