“Satellite communications” is a paper that aims at providing an overview of satellite technology in general.  It has five sections, namely:

1.      History of  Development

2.      Basic components in satellite communications

3.      Advances in satellite technology and system concepts

4.      Applications in satellite technology

5.      Technological Overview

‘History of Development’ deals with the evolution of satellite technology from its nascent stages, i.e., from the time it was wholly used by governmental agencies till the present time.

‘Basic components in satellite communications’ introduces transmitters, antennas and

power generation.  It also illustrates with help of a diagram the overall system of satellite communications.

In ‘Advances in satellite technology’, the paradigm shift in satellite system architechture is explored.  The new deviations from traditional technology has also been mentioned.  The Space Station concept along with possible fields of development is surmised.  In MM Wave Satellites,  the possible use of higher frequencies and applications in HDTV, etc. are briefly reviewed.

In ‘Applications of Satellite technology’, telecommunications, cellular, television broadcasting, marine communications, GPS, spacebourne landmobile and satellite messaging for commercial jets have been introduced.   In television signals different bands of frequency such as C-band, K-band, etc. have been covered.

In ‘Technological Overview’,  orbits, constellations, cell scan cycle have been described.  In orbits, a brief idea regarding GEO and LEO has been given. Constellations cover satellite services like Iridium and Globalstar as well as the Teledesic network which is described in some detail.  An idea is given about the different modes of frequency and time usage which are used by such constellations.

The objective of this paper is not to delve into a particular aspect of satellite communications but to give a general idea of what will be certainly one of the most defining technology of the new millenium.
